The US rating is an R for sexual references, pervasive language, drug use and some strong violence, which is exactly the McDonagh register you would expect. Runtime is just under two hours.

McDonagh wrote and directed. The setting is Chile in 1973, in the weeks before the coup. John Malkovich plays Chris Carlisle, a veteran CIA officer with terminal cancer, and Sam Rockwell plays Lee Chesterfield, his long-time protégé. Their bureau chief MJ, played by Steve Buscemi, sends the pair from Santiago to Easter Island, where Chris's friendship with two student activists (Mariana Di Girolamo and Ailín Salas) starts to pull against the job. Tom Waits plays Chris's brother and Parker Posey plays Lee's wife.
It premiered in competition at the Venice Film Festival on 3 September 2026, where Malkovich won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor. At the time of writing it sits at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes from 162 reviews and 78 on Metacritic. The praise is concentrated on Malkovich and Rockwell; the more sceptical reviews find the film itself less sure-footed than the performances.
My judgement, for what it is worth: if you liked The Banshees of Inisherin for the two-man-argument structure rather than the Irish setting, this is the same engine with a spy plot bolted on, and that is a recommendation.
When will Wild Horse Nine stream?
Nothing has been announced. Not a digital date, not a streaming date, not a platform. Treat any specific date you read this month as a guess, because that is what it is.
What can be said with confidence is the shape of the release, based on how Searchlight titles have travelled:
- In the US, Searchlight is owned by Disney and its films land on Hulu after the theatrical run. The Banshees of Inisherin streams on Hulu today.
- Outside the US, the same films go to Disney+. Banshees and Three Billboards are both on Disney+ in Italy right now.
- Digital rental on Apple TV, Prime Video and the other storefronts normally arrives before the subscription stream, not after.
So the realistic sequence is theaters, then paid digital, then Hulu or Disney+. The gaps vary, and a film with awards momentum tends to stay in cinemas longer, not shorter. Check live rather than planning an evening around a date someone published in a listicle.

- In Bruges (2008) — the film this one most resembles: two hitmen, one city, an argument that runs the full length of the picture. Rent only in the US right now (Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, YouTube, Fandango at Home); it is on no subscription service.
- The Banshees of Inisherin (2022) — streaming on Hulu. Also Searchlight, so it is the clearest preview of where Wild Horse Nine will end up.
- Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) — streaming on HBO Max. Sam Rockwell won his Oscar for it, and his Wild Horse Nine part sits in the same key.
- Seven Psychopaths (2012) — the weakest of the four and skippable, but it is free with a library card on Kanopy and Hoopla, so the cost of being wrong about that is nothing.
