Where to Watch Moulin (2026)
Moulin is in French cinemas only. It opened in France on 28 October 2026, took first place at the box office on its opening weekend, and as of 5 November 2026 it is not on any licensed streaming, rental or purchase service anywhere. Outside France there is no release date yet: the film was pre-sold to Disney+ and HBO Max for international territories, but neither company has announced a country or a date.
This is László Nemes' first French-language film, eleven years after Son of Saul, and it premiered in the main competition at Cannes on 17 May 2026. Gilles Lellouche plays Resistance leader Jean Moulin and Lars Eidinger plays Klaus Barbie, the head of the Gestapo in Lyon who interrogated him in June 1943.

1. Right now: cinemas in France only
Studio TF1 released Moulin on 470 screens across France on 28 October 2026. According to the box-office site Zickma, it drew 296,451 admissions over its opening weekend of 28 October to 1 November, previews included, ahead of Ducobu et le Fantôme de Saint-Potache and Fred Cavayé's Les Misérables, which was in its third week. It is the kind of film French cinemas keep for several weeks, so showtimes should be easy to find through November.
The film is in French with German dialogue in the Gestapo scenes. French cinemas screen it in its original version, so an English-speaking visitor in France will not get English subtitles unless a specific cinema advertises a subtitled screening. If you do not read French, the realistic answer is to wait for the international release.

International sales are handled by the sales company 193. Both English and Hungarian trade coverage say the film was pre-bought by Disney+ and HBO Max for territories outside France. What has not been published is which streamer holds which country, whether either plans a cinema run first, or any dates. No US or UK distributor has been announced either.
So for readers in the US, UK, Canada or Australia the honest status is: no legal way to watch it yet, and no date to plan around. The festival trail continues in the meantime, with an out-of-competition slot in the Icons section at Busan 2026 after Cannes.
3. The French streaming timeline
France's media chronology (the chronologie des médias) fixes the earliest window for each type of release, counted from the theatrical date. Applied to 28 October 2026, this is the earliest Moulin can legally appear on each kind of service in France. None of these are announcements. They are floors set by the rules, and the actual dates depend on which services buy the film.
| Window in France | Earliest under the rules | What it means for Moulin | | --- | --- | --- | | Digital rental and purchase, DVD, Blu-ray | 4 months, so late February 2027 | The first way to watch at home, on stores such as Canal VOD, Apple TV, Orange or Amazon | | Canal+ and the Ciné+ OCS channels | 6 months, so late April 2027 | The usual first subscription home for a big French release | | Disney+ | 9 months, so late July 2027, under the agreement Disney signed in January 2025 | Only if Disney+ carries the film in France, which has not been confirmed | | Netflix | 15 months, so late January 2028 | Only if Netflix licenses it; nothing is signed | | Free-to-air TV | 22 months for a co-producing channel | TF1 Films Production co-produced the film, so TF1 is the natural broadcaster around autumn 2028 |
Studio TF1 has not announced any of these dates. The windows above are the law's minimums, not a schedule.
4. Is it worth a cinema trip?
Reviews are mixed, and they divide along a predictable line. Almost everyone praises Lars Eidinger's Barbie and Mátyás Erdély's 35mm photography, shot largely in Budapest with Lyon's Gestapo headquarters rebuilt on set. The disagreement is over the script by Olivier Demangel: franceinfo calls the film demanding and haunting but finds its Barbie one-dimensional and says the script would have gained from more nuance. The AlloCiné press average stands at 3.3 out of 5 from 37 reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes at 64 percent from 22 critics and Metacritic at 67.
One more thing to know before you go: Jean Moulin's family has praised the film's craft but publicly objected to its historical liberties, including an invented countess played by Louise Bourgoin and its use of Barbie's own account of events. Treat it as a drama about Moulin, not a documentary. The running time is a little over two hours, listed between 2h10 and 2h14 depending on the source.
5. What to watch while you wait
The obvious companion is Nemes' Son of Saul (2015), which won the Grand Prix at Cannes and the Oscar for best foreign-language film. It is a very different film, set inside Auschwitz over a day and a half, but it is the clearest guide to how Nemes shoots: long takes, shallow focus, horror kept at the edge of the frame.
Availability as of 5 November 2026:
- France: streaming with a subscription on MUBI and Paramount+, and to rent on Apple TV, Canal VOD, Orange, Amazon and other stores.
- United States: rental and purchase only, on Amazon, Apple TV, Google Play, YouTube and Fandango at Home. No subscription service carries it.
The short version
