Poor Things - A Bizarre, Beautiful Feminist Odyssey

Poor Things

Directed by Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos, "Poor Things" is a spectacular, wildly imaginative Frankenstein-esque tale that flips Victorian sensibilities completely on their head. The film chronicles the incredible evolution of Bella Baxter (masterfully played by Emma Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant, deeply scarred, and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Reborn with the mind of an infant in a fully grown body, Bella is entirely devoid of societal prejudices and shameful constraints. Driven by an insatiable hunger to understand the world, she runs off with a slick, debauched lawyer (Mark Ruffalo) on a whirlwind, continent-spanning odyssey of self-discovery and sexual awakening.

Emma Stone's performance is nothing short of miraculous, brilliantly conveying Bella's rapid physical and intellectual evolution through astonishingly physical comedy and sharp, declarative wit. The world Lanthimos builds is a visually intoxicating, steampunk, candy-colored dreamscape bursting with distorted architecture and fantastical skies. Beneath its absurd humor and relentless bawdiness, "Poor Things" is ultimately a profound, empowering feminist manifesto examining autonomy, philosophy, and the sheer joy of living without shame.
