Barbie
Greta Gerwig’s "Barbie" (2023) stood out not merely as one half of the ‘Barbenheimer’ box office phenomenon, but as one of the most culturally defining, audaciously brilliant studio films of the decade. Opening in the flawless, plastic utopia of Barbieland—where various Barbies rule supreme and Kens simply exist to beach—Stereotypical Barbie (a perfectly cast Margot Robbie) suddenly begins suffering from very un-plastic phenomena: thoughts of mortality and flat feet. Forced to travel to the Real World to find the girl playing with her, she brings along an insecure, deeply attached Ken (Ryan Gosling, in a scene-stealing comedic tour de force) for a journey that changes them both entirely.
What could have easily been a cynical, two-hour toy commercial is instead transformed into a remarkably sharp, empathetic existential comedy. Gerwig masterfully skewers modern patriarchy, corporate capitalism, and the impossible contradictions of womanhood, all while wrapping her potent themes in eye-popping pastel pinks, glorious musical numbers, and rapid-fire visual gags. Joyful, bizarre, and ultimately incredibly emotionally resonant, "Barbie" represents a miraculous tightrope walk of high-concept summer blockbuster filmmaking.
