Bionic (Biônicos)
"Bionic" represents a highly ambitious and incredibly welcome leap for Brazilian cinematic production into the realm of sci-fi action. Set in a dystopian year of 2034, the Netflix film constructs a society where highly advanced bionic prostheses have entirely revolutionized global sports. Men and women engineered with robotic enhancements now compete at superhuman levels, forcing "unenhanced" convential athletes into total obsolescence. The core narrative focuses on two sisters caught right in the middle of this societal shift: an unenhanced long jumper who watches her lifelong Olympic dream collapse as she fades into irrelevance, and her bionic-enhanced sister who rapidly climbs to superstardom and million-dollar sponsorships.
The central conflict gains serious momentum, not just from the fracturing family drama, but also when the storyline plunges into the gritty criminal underworld of high-performance prosthesis theft and illegal trafficking. The visual effects (VFX) used to bring the futuristic, cyberpunk vision of São Paulo—along with the slick cybernetic limbs—to life are surprisingly competent and contribute heavily to immersing the audience in this universe. The director focuses heavily on high-octane action choreography, effectively balancing a tragic family dynamic with a sharp critique on how far humanity is willing to go to achieve impossible greatness fueled by modern obsession.
Although the script sometimes wavers and occasionally loses its emotional footing amidst the high-speed chases, the distinctly Latin American cyberpunk aesthetic and magnetic performances make "Bionic" a profoundly interesting and worthwhile genre experiment. It serves as clear, undeniable proof that Brazilian cinema fully possesses the capability to create and sustain credible, captivating futuristic universes tailored perfectly for adrenaline junkies.
