Where to Watch Every Resident Evil Movie in Order
Resident Evil is one of the longest-running video game adaptations in film history. Between Paul W. S. Anderson's six live-action films, a full reboot, a Netflix series and a separate line of CG animated movies, there are more than a dozen entries — scattered across different platforms, and rotating every few months.
Which is why a list is the wrong tool. Check what's actually available:

1. The live-action series (2002–2016)
This is what most people mean by "the Resident Evil movies". Six films, one continuous story, best watched in order:
- Resident Evil (2002) — The Hive, the Red Queen, Alice waking with no memory. Where it starts.
- Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) — Raccoon City falls. Nemesis arrives.
- Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) — Post-apocalyptic desert; the clone plot begins.
- Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010) — The first shot in 3D, and the visual style shifts noticeably.
- Resident Evil: Retribution (2012) — Umbrella's simulated cities; the densest entry.
- Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016) — Back to the Hive. Alice's story closes.
Only want the best two? Most fans agree on the first and second. The original's claustrophobic horror is still the high point of the series.
2. The reboot and the series (unconnected to the above)
- Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021) — A complete reboot, much closer to the first two games. It shares no continuity with the Anderson films.
- Resident Evil (Netflix, 2022) — Another standalone timeline, dual narrative, one season.
Neither requires having seen the original six.
3. The CG animated line (closest to the games)
If you came from the games, this line is arguably more rewarding than the live-action films — Leon, Claire and Chris are all here:
- Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008)
- Resident Evil: Damnation (2012)
- Resident Evil: Vendetta (2017)
- Resident Evil: Death Island (2023)
- Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness (Netflix series, 2021)
4. Three watch orders worth using
① Live-action only (fastest) Films 1 through 6 in release order. Done.
② Game-fan order The four CG films plus Infinite Darkness, then Welcome to Raccoon City. Closest to the games in both character and plot.
③ Full release order Everything — live-action, animated and series — mixed by year. Long, but you see the franchise's style evolve.
5. Where to watch free
Earlier entries in particular show up regularly on ad-supported platforms. Worth checking first:
- Tubi TV — Deep action and horror library; the early films are often there.
- Pluto TV — Occasionally runs a horror channel that includes them.
- Plex free — The animated line turns up here more often than elsewhere.
- The Roku Channel — Rotates quickly, so check back.

One warning: don't chase this franchise onto unfamiliar "free HD" sites. That category is a primary malware vector. If you want a local copy, read how to safely download movies in 1080p and 4K instead.
