Bacurau: A Punch to the Gut of Brazilian Cinema

Bacurau: Bloody Resistance in the Heart of the Sertão

Co-directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles, "Bacurau" (2019) remains undoubtedly one of the most impactful and innovative entries in recent Brazilian cinema. The plot unfolds in a small, isolated settlement in the drought-stricken backcountry (sertão) of Pernambuco, named Bacurau. Shortly after the death of the local matriarch, bizarre events begin to occur: the village simply vanishes from satellite maps, UFO-style drones hover over the area, and bullet-riddled corpses turn up nearby. Left with no other choice, the townsfolk band together to violently fight off heavily armed foreign invaders looking to hunt them for sport.

The film radically juggles multiple genres into a chaotic harmony, seamlessly mixing magical realism, classic spaghetti westerns, dystopian sci-fi, and grindhouse horror. There is a blistering sociopolitical critique deeply embedded in this intense bloodbath, tackling themes of hypercapitalism, imperialism, and the systemic erasure of marginalized classes. The fantastic ensemble cast—featuring stellar performances from icons Sônia Braga and Udo Kier—lends unbelievable weight and sheer lunacy to the delirious events unfolding.

Winner of the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, "Bacurau" is far more than guerrilla entertainment; it is a primal scream of marginalized people demanding their existence at gunpoint. A bold, breathtaking, and shocking extravaganza you won't soon forget.
