Look Who's Back: Comedy Meets Uncomfortable Reality
Based on the bestselling novel by Timur Vermes, "Look Who's Back" (2015) is a fiercely dark and incredibly poignant satire of modern society. The premise starts out both absurd and fascinating: Adolf Hitler wakes up in the middle of modern-day Berlin nearly seventy years after the end of World War II. Completely clueless about the modern era, he soon conquers the media landscape as people mistakenly believe him to be a brilliant method actor and comedian.
Director David Wnendt’s film masterfully blends fictional storylines with Borat-style mockumentary elements. Oliver Masucci is brilliant in the lead role; as he travels through Germany in full costume interacting with real pedestrians, the film exposes deep-seated xenophobia and political leanings among the real population. What begins as sheer slapstick gradually spirals into an oppressive observation of our current times.
"Look Who's Back" often makes the laughter catch right in the viewer’s throat. Through relentless dark humor, the film holds an unforgiving mirror up to modern pop and media culture, leaving you with an eerie, lingering discomfort long after the credits roll.
