Impetigore: World-Class Indonesian Folk Horror
Directed by acclaimed Indonesian filmmaker Joko Anwar, "Impetigore" (originally titled Perempuan Tanah Jahanam, 2019) is a masterful folk horror offering that has truly made its mark efficiently on the international stage. The story follows Maya, a struggling toll booth worker in Jakarta who discovers she may have inherited a large house in a remote ancestral village. Desperate for a better life, she travels there with her best friend Dini, completely oblivious to the dark secrets, a bloodline curse, and the relentless tragedy patiently waiting for them.
Joko Anwar proves himself once again as a maestro of horror storytelling, expertly weaving elements of traditional Javanese culture—like shadow puppetry (Wayang Kulit)—into a deeply oppressive thriller. The cinematography is bleak and suffocating, creating a visceral sensation that something evil is watching from the deep forests the moment our protagonists step foot in the village. Incredible performances by Tara Basro and Marissa Anita anchor the despair and genuine terror beautifully.
It is no surprise that the film swept up awards domestically at the Indonesian Film Festival (FFI) and mesmerized global cinephiles (including a premiere at Sundance Film Festival). "Impetigore" isn't just about cheap jump scares; it is an atmospheric, psychological, and culturally rich horror piece that slowly crawls under your skin and haunts you long after it’s over.
