Follemente: Italy's Most Charming Romantic Comedy Is Now Streaming
Follemente — which translates from Italian as "Madly" — is the kind of title that promises a specific experience: something warm, romantic, probably chaotic, and ideally true in the way that only the best comedies about love can be. The film delivers on every dimension of that promise.
Directed by Paolo Genovesi, known internationally for the beloved Perfect Strangers (Perfetti sconosciuti), Follemente is a romantic comedy of considerable intelligence and warmth. Now available on Prime Video, it stands immediately among the best Italian comedies of recent years — a film that wears its craft lightly while executing it with precision.
The Story: Folly Has a Schedule
Carla is a psychiatrist who has dedicated her career and her considerable intellectual energy to the study of human behavior. Her private life is, accordingly, organized with the kind of clinical efficiency that allows her to maintain maximum control over everything — which, from the outside, sounds rather less fun than it is on the inside. Or perhaps exactly as much fun. She would not appreciate the question.
Stefano is a patient. Or rather, he becomes her patient under the most farcical of circumstances — a misidentification, a waiting room mix-up, and the determined certainty of a hospital administrator that is an immovable force. Stefano is, in almost every relevant dimension, Carla's exact opposite: improvisational, emotionally chaotic, chronically late, and pathologically incapable of maintaining the distance she requires of everyone in her life.
The film's central comic engine — the psychiatrist who cannot maintain appropriate therapeutic distance from the most inappropriate possible patient — is managed with the skill and timing of genuine Italian comic tradition. Genovesi understands that the comedy of opposites works only when both characters are fully human, which Follemente consistently achieves.
The Performances: An Ensemble Comedy at Its Finest
The film benefits from the kind of warm ensemble work that Italian film comedy does better than almost any other national tradition — secondary characters who feel like real people borrowed from real life, placed precisely where they're needed and never overstayed.
Themes: The Folly of Control
Follemente is, quietly and consistently, a film about the folly of believing that life can be controlled — that emotional reality can be managed, organized, and scheduled like a psychiatric appointment. Carla's arc is the discovery that the methods which work so well for understanding other people's minds do not constitute a substitute for living within her own. It is a discovery made, inevitably, through humiliation, laughter, and the particular grace of being genuinely surprised by someone you thought you had figured out.
