Monster (Kaibutsu)
Directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, "Monster" is a breathtakingly brilliant drama that exposes the fragility of human perception and how disastrously we misread the people around us—especially children. The narrative elegantly unfolds through three shifting perspectives: a protective single mother who believes her young son is being abused, the seemingly apathetic teacher accused of the abuse, and finally, the two young boys at the center of the conflict. By rotating through viewpoints, Kore-eda systematically dismantles the audience's initial assumptions, unspooling a completely different reality.
Yuji Sakamoto’s intricately structured screenplay tricks the viewer into snap judgments before revealing a deeply hidden truth that is overwhelmingly tender and ultimately tragic. The emotional resonance of the story is perfectly amplified by the late Ryuichi Sakamoto's haunting final film score. The breathtakingly natural performances of the two child actors elevate "Monster" into a devastating, thought-provoking triumph that stays with you long after the credits roll.
