Article 20 - When Law Meets Real Life

Legendary Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou continues to demonstrate his remarkable versatility with "Article 20," his massive 2024 box office success. The film tells the story of Han Ming (Lei Jiayin), a middle-aged prosecutor navigating the turbulent waters of office politics and chaotic family life. His desire to simply keep his head down is shattered when he is assigned a highly controversial murder case involving the concept of "justifiable defense" (outlined in Article 20 of China's Criminal Law).

What makes the film so fascinating is its tone. Yimou brilliantly disguises a serious critique of rigid judicial bureaucracy inside a fast-talking, slapstick domestic comedy. The endless bickering between Han and his wife (Ma Li) provides tremendous comic relief, making the heavier themes of justice, bullying, and systemic failure deeply accessible. Zhao Liying also delivers an incredible, breakthrough performance as a deaf mother driven to desperation, injecting raw tragedy into the comedic narrative.
